“Always Saddle Your Own Horse”

                                                          Connie Reeves

You needn’t be a horseman to embrace the advice of Connie Reeves spoken at the age of 101 “Always Saddle Your Own Horse.”

“Always Saddle Your Own Horse.” Listening to her words of advice gave me yet another means to phrase “be responsible for self.” I have been circling the wagons around this very sentiment for awhile. When I began to embrace a full out faith, and not a cautious one, I realized “always saddle my own horse” is exactly what it entailed.  Going internal into self, to  be captain of my own ship, to saddle my own horse, took on very deep personal meaning.

How many ways in our daily lives do we acquiesce to the belief someone else knows better about our life and how to live it than we do? And not know how to do anything about it.

Always Saddle Your Own Horse” is a reminder that no one can run your life but you, unless you let them.

If you are asking “How do we change a life that appears so run by others?” you have the beginnings of the answer in the question.  Appears. No one can make us believe or think anything. We choose it

  • when we believe others know better for us than we do
  • when we do not question what is clearly no longer working in the world
  • when we blame others for how our life is
  • when we blame ourselves for how our life is
  • when we believe an internal dialogue that does not support us

Thoughts become things is not a new concept. Our thoughts creating in our rapidly changing world is not a new concept. What may be a new concept for you is feeling the power in you to change what isn’t working, change what you have up until now given away and leave judgment and self abuse out of the criteria you use to become aware of your ability to “Always saddle your own horse.”

One step at a time can we take Connie’s advice. Being open to the steps that are presented to us takes being present enough to not predetermine in this very moment what that step is. Be open to exploring new avenues of thought and you are well on your way to always saddling your own horse.

It takes you beginning to be aware that other possibilities exist beyond the one that you are living that isn’t working like it once did. It takes YOU making new choices, even in this moment.
